IIT Guwahati hosts the Chair of Water Life Mission for Water Treatment Technology

The Chair Professor will conduct high quality empirical and applied research in the rural drinking water and sanitation sector, provide policy guidance and build partnerships with the state government.

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has established the ‘Chair of Water Life Mission’ for water treatment technology. The Water Life Mission (JJM) was launched on 15th August 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Red Fort wall. It aims to enable an efficient household tap connection (FHTC) to every rural household by 2024.

The Institute has appointed Mihir Kumar Purkait, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, as the first owner of the chair. The term of the Professor’s Chair will be five years.

Professor Mihir Kumar Purkait has a portfolio of various innovations and developments in basic and applied research. He has been credited with industrializing various technologies for water and wastewater treatment technology, waste resource production, value-added product segregation from a plant source, and electrochemical reduction of CO2 in various products.

The National Water Life Mission (NJJM), Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India, among others, is responsible for implementing Water Life Mission (JJM) across the country, providing policy guidelines and building partnerships with the State Government. The JJM-Professor Chair will work in coordination with the State Water and Sanitation / Rural Water Supply / PHE Department and the State and District Water and Sanitation Missions. It will focus on enhancing the Institute’s skills, outreach, academic programs, and educational activities, and maintaining a balance between in-focus areas of research.

The Chairman will also be responsible for conducting high-quality empirical and applied research in rural drinking water related to the goals and priorities of the Water Life Mission.

The chair will serve as NJJM’s advisory authority on policy or technology and as a think-tank in selected focus areas, in particular, and in the rural water supply sector in general. The chair will conduct a PhD program and related course work in the selected focus area.

Professor Mihir Kumar Purkait has created and demonstrated several prototypes to supply iron, arsenic, fluoride and other contaminated free drinking water to the rural people of Assam with his patented innovative water treatment technology.

Arsenic and fluoride contamination in drinking water is a major and growing concern not only in rural Assam but also in major parts of the country and the technology at IIT Guwahati will assist and assist the Government of India in providing contaminated free drinking water to the people. Prof. Mihir Kumar Purkait has developed various water treatment technologies based on Fluculation-Sedimentation-Filtration for membrane technology, nanotechnology, absorption, electrocoagulation / coagulation and treatment of contaminated drinking water and industrial wastewater. He has built and set up many water treatment plants in temples, schools and rural villages where piped water supply is not available as a project funded by DST, DRDO, DBT and government. Assam.
