IIT Madras students have launched an unmute campaign on monthly hygiene management

As part of Shastra 2022, students are partnering with NGOs for various initiatives like Pad Distribution Drive in Bangalore, an online session on Gender Discrimination and Monthly Health Management Awareness Sessions for Schoolgirls in Chennai.

Students at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras have launched a social campaign called ‘Unmute’ which focuses on menstrual hygiene management and self-defense against sexual harassment. Through this initiative, the students aim to help women talk about it and run awareness campaigns.

As part of IIT Madras’ annual Technical Festival Shastra 2022, students have partnered with non-governmental organizations like Chudar, Go-Healthy, CRY, Sakhya and Swayam to conduct programs like online pad distribution drive in Bangalore. The Monthly Health Management (MHM) Awareness Session for School-going Girls is being held in Chennai from 16th October, a session on Gender Inequality and its Impact on Human Life.

Each year, the Scriptures team tries to identify a social problem and take steps to address it. This year under Shastra 2022, the students have taken up the ‘Unmute’ campaign. The ‘Unmute’ campaign was launched on October 24 in the presence of actor Ahsas Channa.

Every year, about 23 million girls in India drop out of school at the onset of menstruation, Youthfulness Also, 62 percent of women aged 15-24 still depend on clothing during menstruation. Such incidents highlight the need to educate girls about the importance of MHM. The students also want to teach the girls how to follow MHM and give them the tools they need to do it.

Event planned:

  1. MHM Awareness Session – menstrual hygiene baktaderake trained in online / offline mode target audience NGO girls / women will be invited to talk to. তারা মাসিকের স্বাস্থ্যবিধির প্রয়োজনীয়তা সম্পর্কে কথা বলবেন, কীভাবে এর অভাব রোগের দিকে নিয়ে যেতে পারে এবং কীভাবে ভাল মাসিক স্বাস্থ্যবিধি বজায় রাখতে হয় তা শেখাবেন। Sese women’s sanitary pyada will be distributed.
  2. Self-defense – Discusses why women are now victims of sexual harassment, women’s empowerment and identification of dangerous situations and enabling them to defend themselves using simple techniques. Students plan to conduct a few sessions as speakers themselves.
