The cabinet minister has drawn up a five-point action plan to usher in India’s golden age
Union Minister for Trade and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles Piyush Goel was the chief guest at the concluding day of Policy Conclave 2022 organized by Public Policy and Opinion Cell, IIT Kanpur. The session titled ‘Road to Development’ started with a welcome address by Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur.
In the more than one-hour-long interactive session, Piyush Goel spoke extensively about the various policies implemented by the government for the benefit of the people and the role that IITs and IITs can play in translating a vision for the greater good. He emphasized the important role of technology in bringing prosperity to the remote corners of India. Mentioning healthcare initiatives through telemedicine, education through EdTech and much more, he talks about how technology can help democratize our basic facilities.
In response to a question from students, Goyal gave a five-point action plan for IIT students to usher in India’s golden age:
- Focus on scale, quality and job creation in all your ventures;
- Provide innovative solutions for farmers, artisans and weavers, small retailers, etc. and help realize the goals of Make in India for a self-reliant India and the world;
- Study digital platforms (e.g. single window, PM dynamics, ONDC) and come up with ideas for improving facilities;
- Help set the agenda for the G20 presidency of India starting December ’22;
- Make service and dedication your guide and give it back to the nation.

Policy Conclave is an annual flagship event organized by the Public Policy and Opinion Cell of IIT Kanpur with the aim of making students more interested in policy making. Currently, in its fourth edition, the event was organized from 11-13 February with a lineup of eminent personalities from across the sector. From appearing for a scheduled lecture, Ira Singal, AIR 1, UPSC 2014 advised students to be patient and value the experience gained in a timely manner. She shared an episode of how she challenged the discrimination and inequality faced by transgender people in the first district by hiring two transgender people at the receptionist desk. He described it as his greatest achievement.
The three-day event was attended by a large number of speakers from different sectors to discuss various policy issues. It organizes various workshops and competitions to encourage student participation in policy making for the future.
