Instead, the mission will provide evidence of further flight legacy of ZES and its technology for radiation protection of commercial-of-the-shells (COTS) semiconductor solutions in space. ZES has observed that more satellite manufacturers are using COTS for higher efficiency and lower cost, which is not able to cope with conventional radiation hardened by process solutions. These COTS solutions do not improve in space because they will suffer from single event latchup (SEL – a kind of short circuit) and single event upset (SEO – a kind of data corruption) when heavy ions hit. ZES closes the gap by protecting COTS semiconductor devices from power reliability and data integrity issues with hardening by our patented radiation technology. With proper radiation protection, these COTS-based satellites survive longer in space and so service providers can get better return on investment from their launch.
